Cate St Hill on Japandi, introverted interiors, and our suspected ADHD

Cate has been an interior writer for over a decade. We discuss her recently published book on Japandi, the psychology of interiors, and our common ADHD tendencies.

It’s time to put the kettle on — because Spilling Tea is back, baby!

And we are starting the new season with a bang. This week, I’m joined by my friend Cate St Hill — an interior stylist, consultant, writer, and content creator based in London. With a background in architecture, Cate has spent the past twelve years writing about design, first as a journalist and later as one of the UK’s leading interiors bloggers. She now divides her time between writing, styling, consulting for private clients, and creating content for brands. Her work has appeared in The Times, The Telegraph, Grazia, Enki Magazine, and Elle Decoration Denmark, among others. She’s also the author of The Japandi Home: Nordic Minimalism Meets Japanese Zen.

We talk about her book and the ideas that underpin the interior phenomenon known as Japandi — and the fascinating historical ties between the two cultures that shaped it. We also discuss Cate’s thoughtful take on the psychology of interiors, the difference between introverted and extroverted spaces (and which category my home falls into), as well as our shared ADHD tendencies.

I found this conversation both insightful and grounding — I hope you will too.
