It’s no secret that I favour natural materials. When my husband and I set out to create a mood board for our kitchen, our number one goal was to create something that would last the test of time. Kitchens are expensive, and we were nervous about choosing something that we’d be tired of in five years’ time. As graphic designers, we were both very aware of the fact that colours go in and out of fashion very quickly. In our pursuit of timelessness, we naturally gravitated towards a natural palette of wood, marble, terrazzo, and brass. There is an honesty about natural materials, an integrity, which I believe makes them ageless.
This may seem ironic, because materials like marble and unlaquered brass are known to age, and pretty quickly at that. One of my most asked questions, in fact, is how I tend to my marble countertops: are they easy to keep pristine? The simple answer is, they are not. Marble stains and etches, brass develops a patina. But this is a big part of the reason I love these materials so much: they grow and evolve with you, they change over time, and they tell a story.
So, how did we come up with the scheme, and what is the exact colour of the grout between my terrazzo tiles?
You’re about to find it all out.
